James Roday: born in the USA, in San Antonio, Texas
Simon Baker: born in Australia: Launceston, Tasmania
James Roday: played football as teen
Simon Baker: played water polo
James Roday: 34 years old
Simon Baker: 40 years old
James Roday: single, with a steady girlfriend
Simon Baker: has a wife and 3 kids; the 3 kids have odd middle names -
Breeze, Blue, and Friday
Both ‘Psych’ and ‘The Mentalist’ are shows that start with the premise that someone with exceptional perceptive ability may seem to be psychic; each works closely with the local police department; however, James Roday’s ‘Psych’ premiered on July 7, 2006, more than 2 years before Simon Baker’s ‘The Mentalist’ premiered on September 23, 2008.
I have to go with the original, funnier show and James Roday, rather than Simon Baker.
As someone else pointed out, I prefer Frosted Flakes instead of Corn Flakes.
Simon Baker didn’t just play water polo as a teen. He became a champion Australian surfer. There’s also photos of him playing Australian football & rugby.
So what if Psych premiered 2 years before The Mentalist? They are not at all the same. The Mentalist is not posing as, nor “seeming” to be pyschic. He is using powers of observation/perception and states openly that he does not believe in psychics. The idea is not ripped off from Psyche, but comes from real life. There are real Mentalists alive, doing exactly this.
Besides, so what if the premise had been the same? West Side Story didn’t lose anything because the premise was the same as Romeo & Juliet.
I enjoy both shows; both actors. Psyche is meant to be humorous. The Mentalist is darker, with a tormented character who, after losing everything, views villains with sardonic humor and operates with complete disregard for rules. There’s a place for both.
But my vote goes for Simon because of how brilliantly he brings his character to life, often wordlessly infusing lscenes with information just by expressions, movements. He puts his all into it, in every single minute, in every single way.
Alexandra – I completely agree with you about Simon. In my opinion there is nobody better at portraying complex, multi-layered characters, realistically portraying a huge range of emotions, often with few words. Simon has a remarkable ability to internalise those emotions, bringing an honesty to his performances that is rare. And of course, he has great versatility, portraying very different characters with great subtlety and attention to detail. He always completely embodies his characters, and breathes life into them.
Really there’s no competition – Simon should win every time with his charm, charisma, wit, good looks not to mention his brilliant acting. Need I say more!
Both shows, both actors wonderful.
The Mentalist is not a rip-off premise from Psyche. Its premise is largely about a man seeking redemption. Psychics, Mentalists & People Readers working with police is not a special new idea thought up by Psyche writers. It actually happens in real life.
Psyche is meant to be a funny show; The Mentalist is a drama, with a dark story, lightened by the character’s sardonic humor & unpredictability. Unlike Psyche, the main character is not posing as or trying to seem a psychic. He’s a mentalist, who admittedly works through perception & powers of observation. He maintains that there are no such things as psychics.
I enjoy both talented actors, but Simon gets my vote because I marvel at how he even fills silences with information thru his acting technique. Its amazing what he can convey without the use of words!
BTW: Simon was not just a teenage water polo player. He became a champion surfer. Also have seen pics of him playing footy & rugby.
Absolutely no contest! James Roday would win with both hands tied behind his back! (He would beat him with his amazing hair of course! Its easier to see than the hidden pineapple, that the mentalist regularly copies not only the outline of the show but even entire episodes from Psych. While imitation might be the highest form of flattery, the mentalist writers need to start coming up with their own ideas or give Psych the credit for once. Not to mention that James’ amazing acting, writing, and directing puts Baker to shame! James Roday all the way!!!
Simon Baker is by far the better of james, altho i like Psyche, i love
The Menalist..love it
you may not know much about Simon, but if you watch Something New or
The Devil Wears Prada or evr watched the series The Guardian, you can see what a great actor he is and he so nice to look at..so nice
there is no competition here its James Roday all the way!!!!! psych is better and funnier and honestly i had never even heard of the mentalist until i realized they kept making jokes bout in on psych!!!!!!!!
it be nice to have an honest contest but the Baker fan who is cheating doesn’t make it possible 2 days in a row it updates almost every second James Roday rules and this is coming from an Australian Simon Baker is arrogant
James who? The humour in Pysch is so junior high school, the show is obviously targetted at immature tweens/teens.
James Roday is losing in the polls because he does not have many fans. Simple as that.
This is also coming from an Australian.

I can’t believe you just said that. I mean do you see us Psych fans bashing on Simon’s acting. NO!!!!! So don’t go saying that James isn’t a good actor. I’ll have you know that before James became my number one favorite actor, Dick Van Dyke had that spot. It’s extremely hard to beat an actor like that but James did it. Not only is he amazing on the screen but he is amazing off the screen as well. And yuo should also know that the Psych fan base is not only “tweens/teens”, there is a wide variety of viewers. It really enrages me that you say James doesn’t have a fans because he is greatly loved by everyone who watches Psych. I think that you should look up some facts before you start say things that are untrue.
I watch both Pysch & The Mentalist. This poll is for the actor, not the TV show.
Yes, I’m voting everyday for Simon Baker because I like him better as an actor.( i like James Roday too )
I’m not a teen or a tween. I’m 40 years old and I LOVE Psych and I love it because of James Roday who is immensely talent and pretty nice to look at as well. Comedy is hard and good actors make it look effortless. Simon Baker is okay but my vote goes to James Roday. (that rhymes! ^_^)
OK…let’s see: The use of psychic powers to help solve crimes. If Mentalist is a spin-off of Pysch, then Psych (2006) is a spin-off of Medium (2005) All 3 shows, same job description … very different premise/characters.
Heller (Mentalist creator & writer from UK) insists he never saw Psych…was thinking of a crime drama and, on visit to US, saw lots psychic reader shops/signs & that gave him the idea. In the creative field, we see creative coincidences happen like that all the time.
Heller wrote Ment. as dark & serious, said it was Baker who injected the humor. I believe Heller, but even if he’d been inspired by Psych, Mentalist is no more a ripoff than Grey’s Anatomy is to dozens of medical dramas.
I enjoy both Psych & Mentalist & am so tired of this childish “rip-off” tirade. Neither show invented the idea of physics working as crime-solvers–that’s a true fact–physics & people-profilers do work with criminal investigators.
Pysch is the best!! I am not a tween since I am in my 40′s and I get all of the jokes and or humor of the show. I live to see what they are going to go for the next show. No contest its “Pysch” all the way.
Something’s really WRONG with contest. At work, lots of us Baker fans voted, but our votes went to James Roday. Maybe cause our computers are on same server? Still shouldn’t go to other side!
Im going to go with James Roday, Ive been watching Psych ever since it aired and have loved every episode. Now I do believe the core of the shows are very similiar despite that 1 is a comedy and the other a drama. But Really, thats not really an arguement they switch up in both shows, there is comedy in “The Mentalist” and theres drama in “Psych” if anyone has watched either show theyd know that now saying that I actually love “The Mentalist” and im sure James has nothing against Simon or visa versa theyre TV shows these people got hired to play these roles and yeah theyre going to hold there own show in higher standards than the others, its there show but in the end “Psych” is the original “heightened observational skills” TV show so James wins, hands down. But in the end its all opinion, theyre both great shows just enjoy them, jesus does everything have to be a debate?
Both actors and both shows are outstanding. This contest was more about which fans felt more strongly that their actor should win. In the early days it was an individual or group that pushed Simon to a commanding lead. All this did was unite the James fans and clearly his fans where more determined.
The results should be final anytime this one is all over the fat lady has sung, the white towel has been waived, and whatever other sayings can be used to state that its all over.
as someone else pointed, out this is supposed to be a contest about which actor we like, not which show, both actors and shows are good, someone said simon was an arrogant ozzie, watch his interviews before passing judgement, he is in fact quite shy.. simon has the who package, physical features aside his smile could melt an iceberg..but each to their own, no need to slag either guy or show..

Is this fight ever going to end.
Clearly the Simon Baker fans have realized that they are not going to out vote the crazed Psych fans.
The lead has stayed consistent at around 4,000 each day.
With neither Simon or James receiving many votes.
Time to declare Psych the winner, but then again I guess that both of them knew that…
James or Simon against????
Any thoughts maybe Adrian Monk…
